About this deal

It is possible to dye over patterned fabric, but the print itself may turn into unexpected colors, or stay the same color, depending on how it was printed. There are two routes you can go with your dye selection: You can either make it yourself with natural ingredients, or use something professional-grade that's already been pre-formulated for you. If you want to try the truly DIY route, there are a few plant-based ingredients that some people swear by: The challenge – and the joy – of plant dyeing is to learn it well. "There is a lot of diversity among contemporary natural dyers, but what unites us is a love of colour and a taste for alchemy," reflects Susan Dye. "Using a pile of unremarkable dried weld leaves to create a hank of electric-yellow yarn never ceases to give me a thrill. Dyeing requires a satisfying attention to both science and art. Whether consciously or not, successful natural dyers are masters of chemistry and biology. We learn how to extract dye molecules from plants and bind them to fibres. And in all kinds of processes, it's important to control temperature, alkalinity, acidity." If you haven't so much as thought about dipping your hands into a pot of dye since those Camp Mataponi art classes, not to worry—I tapped a real-life dye expertJohn Breining of NYC's Metro Dyeing to share his tips on how to dye clothes. How to dye your own clothes

If the garment you are planning to dye has a light color and you are looking to dye it a darker color: Then all we recommend doing is following the standard instructions for how to use Rit All-Purpose Dye. If you are trying to get as dark of a color as possible, please also read our tips on how to get the darkest color possible. This technique is a great way to neutralise the bleach since baking soda is closer to PH 7 (neutral) and won’t react with the bleach. Don’t be surprised if you still see a stain when you brush off the dried mixture. With the dried, neutralised stain and no more excess bleach, you can start working to remove the stain entirely.First, you’ll want to pay attention to fiber content. A cotton shirt that is made using a polyester thread will result in dye being absorbed differently. It’s likely that the polyester thread will retain the original color while the fabric itself absorbs the dye. Hoodies and t-shirts often have prints on them (we discussed this in the patterned fabric section above) so it’s best to test in an inconspicuous area to determine how the fabric, print, and dye is likely to interact. After dyeing, rinse until the water gets clear; wash separately in cold water with soap and finally dry it. We recommended dye fixatives, and adequate hand washes before mixing the dyed product freely with other clothes. Dying your clothes can help give a perfect, seamless result. However, no solution is perfect, and there are definitely pros and cons to using fabric dye. Pros Always wash and rinse everything thoroughly with neutral soap to allow the dye to attach easily," advises Dye. "New fabrics are often treated with chemicals to protect against damage; even used fabrics can have traces of conditioner or dry cleaning chemicals which resist dyes. Dyeing is like decorating," she adds. "Preparing the surface to start with is tedious but well worth it for beautiful and long-lasting results." For dyestuffs, begin at home – with food waste. "Avocado skins and stones for pinks; used tea bags and coffee grinds for yellows; squash pumpkin skins for orange," says Behan. If the stain is too large, you may end up removing too much dye from the clothing, and you’ll have even more stains to deal with!

Finally, take the cloth out of the stove and shower in cold water until water retains the original color. You would like to wash the garment separately once or twice as a safeguard from staining before sweating on them. When the cycle is done, the empty pod needs to be removed. The instructions say to add some laundry detergent, then run another wash cycle at the same temperature. Dry the garments If the garment you are planning to dye has a light color and you are looking to dye it a darker color: Then all we recommend doing is following the standard instructions for how to use Rit DyeMore. Please note that due to the complexity of dyeing synthetics, you must use the stovetop method when dyeing with Rit DyeMore. If you are trying to get as dark of a color as possible, please also read our tips on how to get the darkest color possible. Thinking about fastness properties? Thanks to the manufacturers! The fiber-dye covalent bonds will provide outstanding color and wash fastness to dyed garments. You may require around 20g of dye to color 1lb of dry fabric.Allow the vinegar to sit on the stain for approximately 5-10 minutes. Add a little more vinegar if the stain is drying out. Bleach is one of the most common household products. You’ll find it in everything from toilet cleaner and almost every cleaning spray to laundry detergent and dishwasher tablets. Bleach can also be a super helpful cleaning ingredient for killing bacteria. Dyeing instruction varies according to the technique applied. A general overview would be helpful for you, though. Presoak the garment in soda ash for about 20min, (improves color fastness) and then add dye and salt. Remember that, squeeze bottles rather than the old day dipping method makes the dye application easier. For beginners, those who are used to fiber reactive dyes on natural fabrics, be courageous to risk your expensive wool and silk products, and dye them glorious new soft with Jacquard acid dye as it surpasses your expectation. It’s an easy process to start up with only water to be added before squirting the colors to clothes. But make sure you have covered all the things you don’t want to be dyed or stained. You will find the original (14) colors mixing very well, and the colors that are repeated are used more while tie dyeing.
