In addition the wood casing is harder than normal and while a lesser (handheld) sharpener works, it can grind a bit on the casing making the wood fuzzy. You do need the black if you’re aiming for any sort of precision or hard, sharp edges – or you can add ink of course.

I used a very slight touch of carbon black ink, but the black pencil was quite adequate to achieve more precise, and darker, patches. If they are what you are looking for, my advice would be to purchase the largest set you can afford. Containing a broad and balanced range of 12 colours, beautifully presented in an attractive box would make the perfect gift for any creative with high quality demands.

The pencils themselves are cased in cedarwood, making them handsome artefacts in their own right, which means they are pleasant to hold and also makes them beautifully easy to sharpen. On the barrel of the pencil is the Caran Dache Swiss made print along with the brand which is Luminance. p>
