About this deal

This afternoon I received my Target Exclusive copy of Pearl Jam's Ten Purple Vinyl in the mail (I believe the same mastering as the 2017 SST). But it's a typical MPO pressing, despite a wet clean there's a constant level of surface noise, which is noticable during the quiet parts. The public perception of the album is watered down thanks mainly to the excision of "Alive", "Jeremy", and "Even Flow" as singles. Although, despite being considered a pioneering grunge album, the writing holds much closer to classic rock roots.

A few of these new versions appeared on 2004's best-of Rearviewmirror, and O'Brien, who has worked with Pearl Jam on most of their subsequent albums, brings Vedder's ad libs to the forefront, sharpens some of the guitar riffs, and generally cleans up the murkiness. You're one of the very few people I've come across who actually realizes that there was no Ten on domestic vinyl until 1994! In addition to the original album as produced by Rick Parashar and mixed by Tim Palmer, the new reissue includes a second disc, titled Ten Redux, that includes a new mix by Brendan O'Brien.

The more recent Redux version was an interesting listen, but even if I did like that remix better it had too little dynamics in comparison. S pressing is the best, it won't be staying in the frame once i get my hands on it, records are made to be played. Stupidest thing is the cardboard sleeve the vinyl came in, completely scuffed the record, even if it DNAP it bring the grade of the vinyl down to VG+ at best, right out of the jacket, brand new.

It felt like “Once” sounded a little weird at the beginning and had a little bit of surface noise, but it was mostly clean. If you were not around the 90's to witness the genesis of grunge, this is as close as you can get to listening to the birth of something new, fresh, and reflective of the times. Thanks to the tight rhythms of drummer Dave Abbruzzese and bass player Ament, the songs lose little of their momentum in this setting, which handily showcases the guitar interplay between Gossard and McCready. Granted, as a new band with few realistic prospects for the kind of success they quickly achieved, Pearl Jam were working with a very different set of expectations than the ones retroactively assigned to them.

This reissue is fine if you just want to listen to Pearl Jam and not pick apart the small inaccuracies of an average vinyl pressing. Overall I'm still happy to have this, plays well enough and looks really beautiful, matching the artwork perfectly. Ten Club holds the best tickets in the house for members-only presale opportunities and rewards longtime fans for their dedication with seniority-based seating. While generally a clean pressing, the mix is very flat, uninspiring, and if not for the songs it contained, would itself be completely forgettable. Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since. Despite printed credits copied from the 1991 CD release, this LP was not mastered at Masterdisk or by Bob Ludwig.
