About this deal

Lexie Elliot’s books are always so good! Absolutely loved The French Girl so I was excited to receive an advanced copy of How To Kill Your Best Friend. The synopsis had me intrigued and I jumped straight into it. While I did feel this was a bit of a slow burn, I didn't enjoy it any less because of that. I love the way Elliott builds her characters and the way she allows us to see inside their heads; learn about their pasts and motivations. The French Girl commands attention. The author provides the perfect dose of character development before unveiling eerie details from her cast’s past, ensuring that we’re properly unnerved when their lives begin to unravel.” –The Associated Press

The thing that frustrated me the most was the constant changing chapters between Georgie and Bronwyn. They were very similar characters so I felt like I just didnt connect with them. Like with a lot of films I love, I'm often drawn to dark and disturbing novels. I think it's because I'm so cheerful and happy in real life. It's kind of like a balancing act. And to me it's almost like immersing yourself in and learning about a different culture. We’re reading two best girlfriends’ narration: Georgie: living at the states, preoccupied, workaholic, cool business woman who was partners in crime with Lissa and Bronwyn seemed like the third wheel of their close connection. But it’s normal when three women form a special bond, always third one finds herself left behind when the other two share more intimate bound.

Someone told me an old band of mine was mentioned in this book, and it's true! My old band from my distant youth does get a mention. Elliott’s latest (after The Missing Years) is a great thriller with lots of red herrings and a blindsider of a twist ending.”― Library Journal The book is told in alternating POVs between Bronwyn and Georgie. I always enjoy alternating POVs as it gives the reader more of an idea of the character's motivation. I think it's a great and interesting technique. How to Kill Your Best Friend is the second novel I have read from Lexie Elliott. I absolutely love her writing style. Lissa, Georgie and Bronwyn have been best friends since they were together in their college swim team. Now, years later, Georgie and Bron are attending the memorial service for Lissa, who drowned in the resort she was running along her husband. She was the strongest swimmer so, how could she drown? Is there any truth in the local myths that say a serpent lives in the waters of Kanu Cove?

Georgie and Bronwyn are quite suspicious of the circumstances behind Lissa’s death, but they go to the resort to honor their friend’s passing. They are faced with bad weather and a sinister feeling during their stay on the island. They start to dig around for answers, but all they keep getting are more questions and secrets that are better off staying buried. An intricate, twisting story…a suspicious death is only one of the secrets among a group of old friends on an isolated island.”– Shelf AwarenessThere were a lot of conversations with this group of friends that were swimming legends in college. They are gathering for a memorial to honor one of their friends that supposedly drowned. Lissa was an excellent swimmer so some found it almost impossible to believe she had drowned, but rumors abound about a possible murder or suicide. The language is crude, debauched, snide & totally politically incorrect. It's certainly NOT for the feint hearted- and honestly I can understand that. It really is below the belt in a lot of ways & I consider myself pretty open minded when it comes to books & movies. (Yet, apparently not so much as I thought, because I must be the only the person in the world who found Bad Santa really distasteful.) But he comes with an infallible love for himself, a cocaine habit that'd tank an elephant and an undying affection for crass porn, which all blossoms to insane heights as he hits the motherlode of self-pity, because... It is the sort of novel I imagine I might have enjoyed as a 15 year old, full of, you know, violence and drugs and sex and music and people who are young and make loads of money and just don't give a shit about anything, yeah. I know it's a satire, but it's a miserable experience reading it.

It is 1997 - the time of Cool Britannia and Things Can Only Get Better. Georgie, Lissa, and Bronwyn were once the best of friends as they bonded in university over their shared love of swimming. The trio has now been split apart with the death of Lissa and Georgie and Bronwyn don’t know how to feel losing their best friend. That's fine, but having started out with such a degree of repulsiveness the book soon becomes very repetitive - drink, drugs, debauched sex...then murder. I get the satire - A&R people will do anything for a hit/more money etc to fund their vapid lifestyles but this could have all been wrapped up in a novella. The story line was a little mixed up and slow, but it worked out in the end because of Ms. Elliott’s writing style and creativity. 3/5 What an entertaining and engrossing thriller! The chapters alternate between the main story focused on a group of friends attending a memorial in a tropical high-end resort gone terrifying, and an unknown character analyzing different ways of killing your best friend and how to get a way with it.

Non riesco nemmeno a catalogarlo come libro d'intrattenimento. Non oso pensare se un adolescente si approccia a tale lettura. Overall, I thought this was a really well executed story. It was dramatic and tense, I had a lot of fun with it! It tells the story of Steven Stelfox, an A and R man in the late 1990s and truely one of the most despicable charachters in fiction. His deeds are bad enough but you also get his inner monologue - the things he filters out are beyond belief but very funny.

Scottish debut novelist Elliott, who holds a doctorate in theoretical physics from Oxford, launches a fiction-writing career with a smart, suspenseful thriller.” –Booklist Steven Stelfox is an A&R dude negotiating the Brit pop scene in the 1990s. It's a cruel, cruel place where everyone is trying to find the next big thing. The young sexy girl singer, the song that resonates with clubbers, the reimagining of the Spice Girls, or those croony Emo "artists." When things don't go his way, Steven may do something like hammer away at a colleague's brain with a baseball bat, but only after his first murderous attempt fails: the one where he tries to overdose the guy, then plugs his orifices with all sorts of embarrassing things. The atmosphere was really well done and the writing was good, but I could not connect with any of the characters, so that was a bit disappointing.
