About this deal

By using a microwave flower press, you skip the weeks it would typically take to press flowers in a book or wood press and instead have your flowers ready to use in just a few minutes. All in all, it’s fun to experiment and see how each flower changes as it dries, both in size, shape and hue! Also, don’t expect a pretty-looking press here; it’s all about speed and functionality with this one. Besides efficiency, another advantage is that you’ll be able to press hundreds of times (if done correctly!) without having to outsource blotting paper or other additional materials. We didn’t get great results with the microwave method. Our flowers became very fragile, and the petals shriveled up a bit and fell off more easily. Since you have to remove the parchment from the microwave before the flowers are completely dry, the flowers are also more easily damaged.

Apart from size and aesthetics, the ultimate choice will be opting between a traditional press or a microwave flower press kit. Unlike standard flower press kits, microwave kits will dry your flowers within minutes vs. weeks. I figured I would try smaller flowers that would press well if I was doing it the old-school way…in a big book. Common flowers that you can press:

How does a flower press kit work?

You will need to determine the right number of seconds to dry flowers based on your microwave. Thus, it’s important to start with less time as you begin the pressing process. Start with 15-20 seconds and adjust based on your own experience. Remember, you can always add more time but you can’t take it away. Select your flowers, unscrew the wing nuts from the bolts, and remove the top board until you just have your blotting paper (or parchment paper) facing up.

The kit contains 50 sheets of blotting paper and 10 plexiglass display frames — a great way to give someone a meaningful gift or set-up a nature-themed gallery in your home.

Flower presses generally come in rectangular or square shapes. Larger ones have a bigger surface area, something to consider if you want to press a bouquet or a mix of foliage or press longer or larger flowers. An extra-large flower press may reach dimensions of 30 x 45 centimetres while a very small one may measure 10 x 10 centimetres.

Place the sealed press in the microwave for an initial short burst (follow directions to the T with this kind of kit!) This complete kit is ideal for crafters ages five and up and is a wonderful way to get children in touch with nature and their creative side. If you already enjoy flower pressing projects, getting this kit for your child or younger family members is a fantastic segue to exploring the activity together. After you have the correct supplies, it’s all about how you want to style the flowers in the frame from there! Here’s three ideas for how to arrange your fresh flowers:Pop them in a frame to create unique rustic artwork. They add colour to every spot in the home, as well as making for a beautiful gift. Create candles that smell as pretty as they look with wax, a glass jar, your favourite essential oils and pressed flowers. You do need to let the flowers sit for a while when they first come out of the microwave. This is because some of the moisture gets trapped in the centre of the press and needs to be allowed to evaporate. The flowers can also be a little hot so make sure you allow them to cool before handling them. I found that I could tell whether the flower would need to be ‘re-cooked’ by feeling how damp the small holes in the press were when I took the press out of the microwave.
