About this deal

I enjoyed browsing through it and reading up on places I knew I would not be visiting because it gave me a good idea of what many parts of the country are like. Cons: The tear out map is not as helpful as the tourist maps you can get on the ground, except for the subway map on the back. Nothing too crazy, but some shrines were listed as being in one complex when they are really somewhere else. A few ramen restaurants in Tokyo (where the fusion started) even hold a Michelin star: Nakiryu, Konjiki Hototogisu and Ginza Hachigo. Designed for first-time thrill-seekers and experienced enthusiasts alike, each book showcases 200 unmissable activities along with awe-inspiring photos, engaging first-hand accounts, and practical advice on how to get there, where to stay and what to eat along the way.

Lonely Planet's Experience Japan travel guide reveals exciting new ways to explore this iconic destination with one-of-a-kind adventures at every turn.Excellent roads, incredible scenery, towering mountains and vibrant cities – Japan is ideal for exploring on four wheels.

Discover Hokkaido’s ski slopes and snow festivals, explore Himeji-jo, and sample Japanese delicacies in Kyoto – all guided by local experts with fresh perspectives. Detour: If you – or the kids – prefer a calmer way to be spirited away by anime, the Ghibli Museum in West Tokyo is also magical. John Walton winds his way through the mountainous Japanese countryside between Nagoya to Toyama on the charming Hida train.Planning tip: Tickets for sumo, kabuki and Giants baseball games usually go on sale one to two months in advance. They’re an everyday item for many, and it wouldn’t hurt to have one in your bag or pocket at all times. Lonely Planet: The world’s leading travel guide publisher Lonely Planet Discover Japan is your passport to the most relevant, up-to-date advice on what to see and skip, and what hidden discoveries await you. Whereas, of the same location, The Rough Guide described it more accurately, pointing out that in the evening there was less to attract the passing visitor.

On weekends, fisher folk set up stalls selling bentō of sashimi and cooked dishes of the local specialty, puffer fish (with the deadly parts removed, of course). There's the culture of tea, which you can appreciate at one of the city's many elegant teahouses; the art of the geisha, those iconic performers of traditional music and dance; and also a rich food culture, including kaiseki (Japanese haute cuisine).Selecting the best guide for you is a little like choosing your ideal partner, or your favourite album of all time – it's a very personal thing.
