Reading this novel was like reliving Hocus Pocus all over again, but in book format and with gorgeous illustrations. The dust jacket features an illustration by Grimly, but when you take this off, you see that the covers of the book are in a lovely red colour with a design in black, making it look like an older book.The written format often allows for such things more easily than the visual, and it would not have been hard to push things a bit without overly impacting the established plot. Nothing new added to make the reading experience more interesting, but it still was an enjoyable read. The pacing was snappy, and I loved the dialogue; this was the perfect book to read in preparation for Halloween! I read the novelization of Hocus Pocus a few years ago when the novelization came out with the "sequel book" (the book sequel is completely different form Hocus Pocus 2 the movie).

The main reasons I picked up the book was that it would be a nice addition to my personal library and for the illustrations by Gris Grimly. Only Gris Grimly's name appears on the cover, but the inside pages reveal that Hocus Pocus is written by someone named A. Hocus Pocus is a classic with a cult following, so when I found out there was an illustrated novel coming out, I reserved it at my library immediately.He lights the Black Flame Candle, accidentally releasing a coven of malicious witches, the infamous Sanderson sisters, from the afterlife. And my curious question-The spell book had the list of names whom apparently owned it, but Winifred was NOT the last to have it. One can tell that Grimly was inspired by the appearances of the actors who originally portrayed the characters, but he made sure to put his own twist upon them to give them a whole new look. They remained true to the movie while also finding ways to expand upon that and provide more detail and storytelling than perhaps we would’ve gotten from the movie alone.
