In The Goblin Corps, the Demon Squad freely curse—they are villains after all; violence is unrestrained and gruesomely explicit, venturing at times into disturbing and horrific territory; and the body count is deliciously high, even including some of the main characters. If you ever wished that Brandon Sanderson or David Eddings could be a tad bitter more realistic in content, or Scott Lynch and Joe Abercrombie a tad bit funnier then you will love the way that Marmell has struck a wonderful balance between the two. Interesting personality quirk, but again, it’s the same schtick repeated over and over again for 500+ pages, and it gets pretty annoying after a while. Grasping for the Wind "To my relief, The Goblin Corps possesses the same elements that made [Marmell's] The Conqueror's Shadow so much fun to read.

Like Abercrombie, Marmell puts his own twist on fantasy tropes, and like Martin he is unforgiving with the lives of his characters, but though his narrative decisions resemble these two's somewhat, at the end of the day it's difficult to peg his writing down as similar to either of them.
