About this deal

The three main Metal Gear Solid games have their own launchers, versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake are packaged into one, and then there's even more bonus content housed in a fifth, completely separate application. Stick with it if the controls are off putting, there are gems hidden under those pixels and polygons. I have a Japanese PS3 that launched in 2006, and I can already play the PS1, PS2 and PS3 versions where applicable, and this machine has been able to do that for the PS1 and PS2 versions since launch. Please note: Virtual goods are eligible for PayPal Credit with the exception of electronic gift cards and software downloads. Looks like the score is for the games themselves and not the collection which looks like a hot mess.

If you select UK English or a European language from the front-end, the Master Collection defaults to the European version of MGS1, capped at 25fps to suit the 50Hz PAL standard - not ideal. The problems start after booting into the action, where there's little ambition to update the games themselves for modern hardware. Volume 1 line-up features the original titles and beginning of the METAL GEAR series: Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid (Including VR Missions/Special Missions), Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (HD Collection version), Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (HD Collection version), and much more bonus content!

themightyant MGS1 requires a minimum of two playthroughs, and all three games ask you to get a Fox / Big Boss rank. This simply requires copying a few files to each game's install directory, amd then editing the provided . Their 20-minute cutscenes are a welcome invitation; their stealth gameplay and Big Boss rank attempts a fun challenge.

There's something to be said for having all these classics in one convenient package for today's consoles and PC. It's disappointing stuff, especially given Konami's suggestions before release that these games might target 1080p. I'm definitely probably going to pass this time, I bought them all on NES, PS1 and PS2 and PC when they came out, I imported the complete collection on PS3 Japan and I bought the remasters on PS3 and Vita and even had some of my covers signed by Hideo in Leipzig back in 2005. In booting either of these games, you'll even catch a flash of the old HD Collection logo in the bottom right. Even a native 1080p or 4K version of the game would have been a hugely welcome extra, and looking at PS1 emulators on PC like Duckstation, forcing higher resolutions allows for surprisingly good results.

Thankfully, this becomes a non-issue once you actually boot up and get started with one of the three main games.

Texture filtering is problematic too, with PS5 running at a much higher anisotropic filtering setting than Series X. Every version has problems, but some - most notably Switch - are much worse off in terms of both visuals and frame-rate. Running the Xbox 360 HD Collection on a Series X console gives us improved anti-aliasing, plus forced texture filtering via back-compat support. Like if they were to do a remake collection of uncharted 1-3 would be separated like mgs and ff pixel remaster. They still do as the unique direction of Hideo Kojima is clear to see, but it's smeared somewhat by PS1 pixels and dated PS3 visuals.Given the extent of the issues across all three games though, I can only hope this is the beginning of Konami's efforts to improve Volume 1 - and that the lessons learned are applied to the inevitable Volume 2 follow-up. There are omissions of course, but it would have been enough if each game had been ported to current-gen consoles with the love and attention they deserve - but sadly, this isn't the reality.
