About this deal

They had met on the dating app Hinge and were meeting up a couple of times a week before coronavirus hit, going on dates and slowly starting to meet each other’s friends.

We meet John, who sits in a 24-hour McDonald’s in the Hong Kong suburb of Sai Kung, sipping warm water and ruminating on the state of the city. As I started his book, I found it both eerie and surreal to read about these events that we now know all too well. With nowhere to go, Kristal accepts Lisette’s invitation to stay with her, until the pandemic is over.I knew it was meant as a kind of gasp of shock at the end of their plea, a crowning moment of appeal. In this pandemic-ridden world, this novel reminds us how human contact will never cease to be mankind’s saving grace through the darkest times. Written by DANNY SPRING, Lockdown Lovers – Set in Melbourne during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kristal (Kate Mayhew) is enjoying the last few days of her trip to Australia when she meets Lisette (Stevie McKeon) on a night out in the city. But for every whirlwind romance that worked out this year, there are plenty that couldn’t take the intensity of pandemic. John winds up contracting the virus and being relocated to a quarantine centre on Lamma, where he reconnects with a young activist on the district council he had met previously.

The virus provides a pathogen that can be named and resisted, solutions that can be purchased and hoarded: the trolleys “full of sanitary towels” and “alcohol disinfectant”. When Lockdown Lovers opens with “Hong Kong February–March, 2020”, we expect a flashback to hysteria and paranoia.Always delivered with a cheeky grin and a thunderous onstage energy, his eclectic sets have torn the roof off nightclubs and festival stages across the globe. For James and Sarah, this relationship crash-course simply sped up the process of realising their incompatibility, something that in normal circumstances might have taken them years rather than months. In an illuminating meeting between John and an old friend, they discuss Hong Kong’s “infection mentality” and pose Hong Kong as a city whose decision to “self-isolate” and withdraw to the margins began long before the pandemic. We were comfortable letting off steam with each other and then disappearing from each other’s lives, no questions asked, sometimes for years on end. Lockdown Lovers is a story set across two continents, six humans and a pangolin, the mammal reportedly at the root of the virus.

With thousands of its brothers and sisters being slaughtered, mutilated, and tortured every day in this corner of the Southern Hubei forests, it found itself distressed. Years from now, perhaps someone will study the psychology of living through a pandemic and the various coping mechanisms we turn to.One of O’Sullivan’s three narrators is John, who is an Irish professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. as a lover of heady scents think oud, jasmines etc this ticks the box of an almost incense ( without all the chemicals) well it does to me anyway. As a reader, it felt good to laugh about these shared experiences and to know that it’s all right and even normal to be anti-social these days. Under these circumstances, it makes sense that it would produce a virus to protect itself and its species. For anyone who has ever spent time in Wan Chai or Causeway Bay, it’s almost impossible to miss Hennessy Road.
