About this deal

Leon’s descriptive prose is delightful: “Bocchese was at his desk, along with the detritus of days, if not years.

On a cold night shortly before Christmas, an immigrant street vendor is killed in Venice’s Campo Santo Stefano.Or has she stumbled on to a deeply rooted, far more sinister scenario – and put her own life in very grave danger? And now he’d been arrested in Treviso at the gay pride parade and had, it seemed, struck another officer.

Is this the natural reluctance of Italians to involve themselves with the authorities, or is Brunetti facing a conspiracy of silence? So he ran towards him, but before he could get there, one of the people from the parade grabbed the sign, pulled it away from him and slammed it on the ground a couple of times. Brunetti, noting that ‘friends’ had been demoted to ‘colleagues’, paused a moment before asking, ‘Can we speak to Alvise first? And before the night is out Brunetti is confronting yet another appalling and apparently senseless death. The beginning chapter illustrates the deeply caring personally of police Commissario Brunetti and the vivid Venice setting that are hallmarks of all of these novels. Brunetti interviews Kavinda's employer Gloria and several of the caretaker's acquaintances, and is told that Kavinda was a gentle man who worked hard and sent money to his wife and children back in Sri Lanka. From the canals and palazzi of Venice to a gypsy encampment on the mainland, Brunetti struggles with institutional prejudice and entrenched criminality to try to unravel the fate of the dead child.

But when the girl is found stabbed to death, Claudia Leonardo is no longer Paola’s student, but instead becomes Brunetti’s case. He becomes drawn deeper and deeper into their dangerous game of deceit and desire, until his role brings him to a shocking and premature revelation. The thought of the feral mug of warm, damp air in the passenger cabin only confirmed the wisdom of his choice.

Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. My thanks to Grove Atlantic for providing an early copy of this book, via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. SO SHALL YOU REAP is authentic throughout and lives up to the lofty reputation Donna Leon has rightly earned for this series that never fails to enlighten with each successive mystery tale. Inspector Brunetti is transported back to his student days, to the Italy of the red brigade activists — bombing, kidnapping, disappearances.

La autora tiene un gran habilidad a la hora de crear personajes complejos que cobran vida en sus páginas con aparente sencillez. Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez is not the man he once was, since the death of his fiancée and at first he takes a back seat in the investigations, led by Detective Inspector Willow Reeves (originally from the Hebrides) who is drafted in from the Inverness team to head up the investigation.SO SHALL YOU REAP is the latest release from Leon and there are two storylines at the center of this novel. Bert’s son Aaron thinks his mother, Verity, killed Bert, who has a very shady past, with plenty of affairs with other women.
