Players must create a diverse and harmonious ecosystem – each animal species has a different spatial preference and each habitat must be placed to reduce fragmentation and create wildlife corridors. There’s also one or more animals on each hex ready to buddy up or keep its distance from other indigenous species!
A peaceful, puzzley experience whose simple rules and minimal set-up fuss make it an ideal way to introduce people to the joys of Eurogaming, while still providing enough of a challenge to please tabletop veterans. It’s relatively quick to play, offers a nice puzzle to solve and still gives you plenty of decisions to make. I enjoyed the different levels of the games likes it predecessor 'tiny towns' but simple but high enjoyable games.
The game ends when the Habitat Tile stack runs out (which is, rather satisfyingly, exactly 20 turns per player), and then it is on to scoring. In most cases, your turn will comprise little more than selecting a tile (either from a shared group or your own hand) and laying it down on the table, ideally arranging it in such a way that it both earns you the most points and forms the most pleasing visual tableau. And although I can sometimes be left feeling like a poor relation when solo modes are a simple BYOS, the added scenarios in Cascadia offer more.
The scoring objectives are juicy point providers, but it’s impossible to achieve them all and get the corridor bonuses in just 20 turns. It's easy to learn, plays quickly, and has enough variation to keep things interesting with repeated playthroughs .
While it will not be everyone’s cup of tea, if you like tile-laying and puzzles it is definitely worth your time. But only one Wildlife Token can be placed on each tile (even if it shows more than one), and once it has settled there, no uprooting it to somewhere else! There is a strong replay ability because you can mix and match cards to make each game's goals different. In Cascadia: Landmarks expansion, players create sprawling habitats and place beautiful natural landmarks within them.
