About this deal

Other highlights include the pining 'Pink In The Night', a tale of fading, unreciprocated love and 'A Pearl', whose building guitars and dramatic horn flourishes further emphasise the sentiment of passion going off the boil. Some songs (especially A Pearl and Nobody) sound like they're coming out of a radio speaker that favors vocals over everything else, but it's generally a good mix.

Mitski’s fifth LP - and second for Dead Oceans ( Slowdive, Khruangbin) - finds the singer finding great emotional depth in her mixture of college rock, grunge and twee-punk. For most of the tracks, we didn’t layer the vocals with doubles or harmonies, to achieve that campy ‘person singing alone on stage’ atmosphere. Japanese-American indie-rocker Mitski was once a cult favourite, but in recent times her audience has grown exponentially, helped by the critical praise heaped on her fourth album, 2016's Puberty 2. at the top of its lungs, but a closer probe at song structures that dodge repetition and defy verse/chorus conventions exposes a warped shape of what a pop song can be. The gargantuan opener 'Geyser' is a towering monolith of bursting percussion and fuzz-laden guitars.

I had been on the road for a long time, which is so isolating, and had to run my own business at the same time," Mitski explains, "a lot of this record was me not having any feelings, being completely spent, but then trying to rally myself and wake up and get back to Mitski. Mitski’s carefully crafted songs have often been portrayed as emotionally raw, overflowing confessionals from a fevered chosen girl, but in her fifth album, Mitski introduces a persona who has been teased before but never so fully present until now—a woman in control. Every record is shipped in original factory-applied shrink wrap and has never been touched by human hands.

However, the often overlooked aspect of being a rising star is the sheer amount of work that goes into it. Though she hesitates to go so far as to say she created full-on characters, she reveals she had in mind “a very controlled icy repressed woman who is starting to unravel. Adopting fictional personas for 'Be The Cowboy', Mitski moves away from the candid soul baring and biting introspection of 'Puberty 2'; the end result being a triumph of an album bristling with pop sensibility.Rather than avoiding this dilemma, Mitski addresses directly the power that comes from appearing impenetrable and loneliness that follows. Her fresh sonic direction was a conscious effort on her part, informed by the desire to progress as an artist and the fear of the same stagnance she’s seen other artists fall into when they get too comfortable. Wall to wall with 80'S synth doodling, tinkling keys and organ, melodic picking and of course THAT seductive voice, the 14 tracks here would in a sane world make this lady a household name.
