Matina: I’m torn because I like how wacky it got at the end, but beyond enjoying it for what it was I don’t feel like the second half lived up to what the first half seemed to promise.
Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Due to the nature of the story, it's left in the air whether Blackfire has any actual power. This turns Blackfire's followers against him, as they see that their leader is unable to ignore the pain and sacrifice as he preached, and they fall on him. Unlike Batman : Prey, which I think is a masterclass on how to use the media to enhance a story, The Cult has talking media heads tell half of its story. Michael : I never thought South Park would be a plausible comparison to a Batman story, but you’re completely right.From Issue 1, the hallucination of The Joker tells Bruce "he's there to educate him, just like in Sesame Street". Because of how this story is set up, you could potentially make the argument that this isn’t necessarily a Batman story, but a story with Batman in it.
Book four of a four-issue series, "Combat" finds a reinvigorated Batman looking to reclaim Gotham City from Deacon Joseph Blackfire and his religious cult. Thanks to the city under hell, Robin, and his determination, it's up to Batman to make it out alive and save everyone.
Also, there's no overarching play here with Blackfire's unbelievably easy takeover of Gotham - he just wants to die at the end and become a martyr to his crap religion of homeless people.
