About this deal

This opaque purple-colored wine is not as developed or flamboyant as Fonseca, but it is super-concentrated and multi-layered, with huge masses of fruit and some tannin in the finish. Described as combining the delicacy and refined aroma of an amontillado with the structure and body of an oloroso, its made from grapes usually selected to produce a fino. The story of this House is unusual – rather than a British merchant journeying to Oporto, it was Bruno da Silva who travelled from Oporto to London. Dow’s attractive and distinctive drier finish is the recognizable hallmark of the wines from this great Port house. Create a unique gift package with our luxury Dark Mocha Leather Effect presentation box with silk liners.

The Dow's Port company has been producing fine port for over 200 years, and during that time, they have built a reputation for excellence and quality. Dow’s Port is one of the most famous names in the Port trade and today is owned and managed by the fifth generation of the Symington family. On the palate, it is exceptionally full-bodied, rich and powerful with black fruit coming to the fore. For sherry too, liquids range all the way from light and refreshing finos, through to the delicious, intensely sweet stickiness of a Pedro Ximénez (PX). In the longer-aged ports on our list we’re seeking character; those deeper notes of fig, nuts, and butterscotch. Bottles in this Auction are never classed as brand new and Boxes/Bottles/Packaging etc may have marks or creases due to their age.

Careful blending leads to a premium quality port with a fine balance and flavour that is worthy of the Dow’s name. If you want to take your time, bed down deep into an arm chair, and snuggle up away from the cold, then the Ramos Pinto RP20 20 year old tawny port is truly worth taking your time over. This has a superb nose of rich, ripe berry fruit with the typical slightly austere and firm reserve of Dow. These dry sherries – in fact the driest type of sherry – are made from palomino grapes, and are known for being light, great with food, and refreshing. And what’s more, representing incredible value for money, you really don’t have to spend a fortune to get something of quality. But if not, please let it just be so cold that we can cancel all plans guilt-free, and watch back-to-back Christmas films, while sipping on something sweet and satisfying. For styles that lean sweet, we’re looking for ones that aren’t overpowering, allowing some of the lovely rich, fruit flavours to come through. Best known for intense, impressive and age-worthy fortified wines, Portugal relies almost exclusively on its many indigenous grape varieties. Edward became a highly respected figure in the London wine trade and was one of the founders of the Wine Trade Benevolent Society, the leading charity which survives to this day as the principal British wine trade organisation. Dow's Christmas Port is a specially selected blend of rich, vibrant young Ports that have been carefully matured in oak.

The old vines are very low-yielding, producing on average less than 1Kg of grapes each, giving intense and concentrated musts which are ideal for classic Vintage Port.

With their warming fruitiness and satisfying thickness, fortified wines – and especially port – are an obvious choice for festive celebrations, be they high tempo, or low key.
