Higher ABV is becoming the place to go with whisky now, for me, because it gives me the flexibility to tailor the experience to my heart's content – the chance to release suppressed flavours or dampen down others.

An immediate sharp and biting flavor hits my tongue, again similar to that of a cask strength bourbon.The Bothy is bottled at cask strength without chill filtration or artificial colouring for the purest form of whisky possible. Arran The Bothy is a limited edition expression, bottled at cask strength, matured in ex-bourbon casks before finishing for 18 months in small Quarter Casks. Arran The Bothy is burnished gold in colour, with Arran's signature citrus notes on the nose, complimented by the vanilla and cinnamon spice aromas of the American oak Quarter Casks. Arran Distillery's commitment to authenticity, craftsmanship, and the natural beauty of the Isle of Arran sets it apart as a cherished destination for whisky enthusiasts seeking a taste of the island's harmony in every dram. The bottle design of the Bothy meets expectations as set out by all other Arran offerings, so I won’t dwell too much on it other than to say that I like it.

I also far prefer the Quarter Cask over the Sherry Cask sister dram, because it’s clear now that I prefer bourbon-based whiskies at the moment, but loads of folk hold the Sherry Cask up as their go-to sherried dram of choice.

Am not an advocate of watering whisky but this really benefits the flavour and seems to make it more viscous and the flavour lingers long. This isn’t just the best NAS whisky on the market, it is probably the best value for money you will find also. If you don’t have the tubes, which I never do because of my illuminated supershelf, the bottles only state in big bold typeset “QUARTER CASK” and “SHERRY CASK”, so I’m not sure why these auxiliary names are used, or inferred, only on the tube. The tangy sweetness of slowly caramelised onion chutney and creamy cheese is a classic combination for a reason.
