About this deal

This post introduces an extended set of firmware features now available on 6 models of Browning Trail Cameras: The Recon Force and SpecOps versions of the Edge, Elite-HP4, and Elite-HP5 (BTC-7E, BTC-8E, BTC-7E-HP4, BTC-8E-HP4, BTC-7E-HP5, BTC-8E-HP5). Since the temperature sensor used to provide the “ambient temperature” reading on the info strip is close to SOC processor (perhaps in the SOC? I would moun My only concern was that for two of them, I worked too close to the baffle “edge” and actually made a small hole in the side.

In general use, we don’t use the USB port to download photos in the field — we just swap the SD card, like most everyone else. But for both of these positives, Browning has also removed the heat sink from the SOC, which could increase the amount of heat flowing through the PCB. I will stay away until the pups are already roaming freely and relocated to the next “Rendezvous” site. The night time video duration can now be increased, but all of my night time videos are solid black. It keeps the slimmer case design of the previous Edge version, with the catch slightly beefed up too.

This allows you to scroll through the vids and see a “preview” of the video, which in the past always included a view of the critter (or shadow, grass, etc.It is a worthy replacement for the Recon Force Advantage and gives you plenty of ways to control how it shoots both still photos and high definition video clips. Since then, I have had several requests for support in more cameras, as well as a few additional features. We also work with a number of large environmental organisations and charities around the world also using Browning trail cameras. Recording video is another of the key capabilities of the Recon Force Edge, and it makes full use of its suitably powerful internal components and high resolution sensor to allow for clips to be captured at 1080p full HD at either 30 frames per second or 60 frames per second.

The only difference between this and the Spec Ops Elite HP4 is that this camera has low-glow, rather than no-glow, LEDs. I did the PIR modification a couple of months ago on several of my Browning cams, and I wanted to share one caveat/limitation I’ve discovered. Hold the wire in place with one hand (so it doesn’t come off when solder melts), and heat the pad up with the iron until solder melts completely and wicks up the wire. Our solution was a old GoPro helmet mount which I drilled a couple of countersunk holes in it so that it could be easily screwed onto a post. Cellular cameras are closer, but Cellular wireless is not quite what you want due to it’s high latency and lack of peer-to-peer support. It’s possible Browning made this modification along with the faster trigger speed in the Elite to increase the likelihood that animals are in the center of the frame for singleton photos. the venerable BTC-7A: it’s certainly smaller, more battery-efficient, and has a shorter trigger delay.
