About this deal

Daft thing is, parked in the drive, it links almost immediately with my home WiFi enabling me to upload destinations input to the app.

The Infotainment manual states that there are two possible ways of connecting the car to the Internet. I've got my carnet code - and I've actually paid for another year because it was going to run out in November. The Car Stick is supposed to plug into the USB port by gear stick and will then share the connection with the head unit and allow for the car to become a Wi-fi hotspot. Plugging it in with hotspot enabled then forces it to connect and it continues to work after unplugging. For example when navigating, you can have the map in front of the driver and the directions on the centre screen, or you can have the map on the centre screen and the directions in front of the driver, it's very slick indeed and especially helpful if you're driving solo to somewhere new.

I knew that the car relied on an external WiFi source for the Skoda Connected to work on the latest Amundsen.

Following on from this, am I correct in thinking that by connecting the satnav system to a hotspot will also give dynamic road traffic conditions above and beyond what it collects from the radio? You can tether it when you plug it in to the USB port (with hotspot on and discoverable) and it will connect and continue working after you unplug. If I get chance and remember I will have a go for you - it's my guess it will be fine - on an iPhone at least! You state that you connect your iPhone to the Infotainment system using a USB cable, but then you refer subsequently to using only Apple CarPlay, Siri, Apple Maps, etc.Any way I think i've managed to get it working, so thought i'd post to share with anyone else on EE.

And i like just leaving my phone in my pocket, or in the centre armrest, and not having to faff around with a USB cable on every journey. So i need to get a 'carstick' I presume, but then that would use up my USB port, may as well us my phone as the hot spot in the first place! Definitely better quality sound with the system using the SD or hard drive as opposed to playing from the phone via cable or bluetooth. This means battery drain is not an issue, the hotspot on the phone is not working whilst away from the car, but charges when in use. We are registered with the Information Commissioner, registration number ZA187892, it details the purpose for which we process personal data.I am wondering therefore whether there is any other way of connecting a smart phone to the Infotainment system to provide an Internet connection. I understand about the VW Carstick, but its really expensive, and I want to know if its unique in some way or a more generic device would do the same job? and charge the phone, one the the cubby hole in front of the gear lever and the other in the compartment under the centre armrest.

I know most people now probably don't have a digital music collection like this, but I still do, so might as well use it. I think the car stick is expensive and as you say it plugs into the usb so you would be unable to use apple car play android auto or mirror link at the same time. I also have managed to connect the Infotainment system in my car to the WiFi hotspot of my home router. It would be as simple as turning on the unit and connecting a device to it with the supplied password (on the back of the router).Considering that the antenna for these frequencies is tiny I can't see how the vehicle body would make any difference, I think you would find that any MiFi unit would work just as well and give you 4G, albeit without any integration. When I pointed out that there are probably about four times as many Android phones in the world as there are iPhones, they couldn't comment any further!
