About this deal

Sir Michael’s and Mr Collings’ are, together, the touchstone, the standard by which one can judge other such readings. In the original beige canvas binding with yapp edges and with 4 black and white plates by James McBryde. Had he not written in the genre, Rhodes would have been remembered an expert on apocryphal literature and medieval manuscripts, as director of Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum, and Provost of Eton. Always unnerving, sometimes freaky, often grotesque, they never fail to send a shiver down the spine.

R. James, Provost of Eton, one of the most formidable scholars that England has ever produced, who has drawn upon an unmatched knowledge of the hidden byways of the past to form a series of inimitable stories. But, open your mind a bit, let the lush words and phrases wash over your thinking, and allow the author his due in his way of ending his tales and you will soon find yourself enjoying every bit of it. The next best thing, I suppose, is a recording, to be enjoyed in the comfort of our own homes, and it’s a little startling to realise how recently recorded readings became available. He has written articles for the likes of Fortean Times, Strange Attractor Journal, Darklore, and Paranormal Magazine, and is a contributing editor for The Daily Grail online.

With a contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper, dated December 25th 1911, and a Blackwell's bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Cloth slightly soiled with small split to joint, hinges starting but holding, some light scattered foxing throughout. He makes the formula sound easy, and he had many imitators, but James remains the master of tapping into our inner fears, the dark places of our minds and souls, our unconsciousness, where we are pursued by a thing unknown, the inadmissible, perhaps the secret self; the primal fear of things that go bump in the night.

Ghost Stories of an Antiquary” was written as two collections, presented here as two volumes in a single work. Canon Alberic's Scrapbook' has a very 1970s EC comic book feel followed (as in the original source material) by 'Lost Hearts' which has an altogether more modern Tim Burton/anime-style which works beautifully.Bound in the original publishers' fawn linen cloth over boards, crimson fillets across boards with black titles to upper board and spine. WE HAVE MULTIPLE OPTIONS IN COLOR OF LEATHER RED, GREEN, BLUE, MAGENTA, TAN, DEEP BROWN, BLACK WITH DIFFERENT COLOR LABELS. In 2008 The History Press published 800 Years of Haunted Liverpool - John's weird history/paranormal guidebook to the city. If you are unable to suspend your modern disbelief as regards the existence of such entities, you really waste your own time in reading such tales.
